Newham Winner Says £1 Million Win at 80 Changed His Life
An 80-year-old competition winner from Newham says landing a life-changing £1 million prize with Elite Competitions has given him “a whole new lease of life”, on the very same day he became a grandfather for the sixth time.
John Lewis scooped the headline £1 million cash prize in Elite Competitions’ Millionaire Maker draw just 12 months after losing his leg and adjusting to life in a wheelchair. What followed, he says, has completely transformed his outlook on the future.
How the £1 Million Competition Win Changed Everything
Before becoming a winner, retired maintenance manager John says daily life had become repetitive and isolating after his operation.
He explained: “Life has been a bit miserable. Every day felt the same as yesterday. And I felt there was nothing to look forward to.
"All I did was move around the house downstairs in a wheelchair, watch a bit of TV and get totally bored. I couldn’t go anywhere, didn’t know what to do and all I kept thinking was I need something more than this.”
That changed instantly when his number was drawn in Elite Competitions’ biggest ever £1 million competition prize at the time.
Travel, Music and Family Plans After Becoming a £1 Million Winner
Since his win in November, John and his wife Cecille have begun planning experiences they once thought were out of reach.
He said: “This money has made things possible again. I can look forward and do the things I’ve not been able to do. We're basically just going to enjoy ourselves as much as we can.”
Already, the couple have planned:
- A Caribbean cruise
- A long weekend in New York
- A future trip to Malta
- A visit to Brazil later this year
John has also bought an automatic Bentley Arnage, installed a new kitchen at home, returned to his love of music with a piano accordion, and treated his children to generous support following his competition win.
A Winner Focused on Helping His Children and Grandchildren
Despite becoming a £1 million winner, John says the biggest priority for him is supporting his family.
He explained: “The best thing I can do with it is help my children. I don't want people to think that I'm a different person now because I've got money. I still want to be the same person I have been all my life.
“I want to give the children things that I never had when I was growing up. I think they’ve got life pretty hard these days. House prices are high and the cost of life is expensive. I can use this money to give them more of an advantage. I’ll be helping my grandchildren too.”
Now learning to walk again using a new prosthetic limb, John says the win has given him renewed motivation and optimism.
A Double Celebration He’ll Never Forget
Remarkably, John’s £1 million competition win happened on the same day his daughter Kelsey gave birth to his grandson Atticus, making it a moment he describes as unforgettable.
John said: “It feels like Atticus is my lucky charm. I believe that he's the one who brought me luck for the win. It felt like life gave me two gifts in one day and I lay in bed that night thinking, ‘this can't be real’.”
The coincidence turned an already life-changing moment into what John calls one of the most special days of his life.
Elite Competitions Celebrate Another Life-Changing Winner Story
Commenting on the win, Alex Beckett, CEO of Elite Competitions, said: “We love to hear how our winners spend their cash prizes. When we met John, we knew his win meant far more than money. We are happy to play a part in a hugely positive chapter of his life. We wish him the best with his ongoing recovery and hope he enjoys every single penny of his winnings.”
Stories like John’s highlight the real impact a £1 million competition prize can have, not just financially, but emotionally and personally too.
